they return from inspecting the beach.

lanning for her beach wedding on a
sunny spring weekend, Nicole Neuman decided to wing it
in case of bad weather.
We walked down to the beach Sunday morning and decided this
wasnt going to work, Nicole said. Despite a clear blue
sky, 30-mph gusts were whipping up sand. It was ridiculous.
But she had already made a backup plan thinking more of rain
than of wind to hold the wedding in the space under one of
four elevated beach houses the families had rented for the weekend.
Nicole had met fiance Mike Hughes while both worked at the same shopping
mall in New Bern. They dated through college: She at at UNC-Chapel
Hill, he at NC State. (We have trouble during basketball season,
Nicole admitted.)
He proposed to me at the park where we had our first date,
she said, on the riverfront in New Bern. Nicole moved to Wilmington
for a graphic art job at the Star-News; Mike is an electrical engineer
at Southports Brunswick Nuclear Plant.
Her advice to other brides: You have to be organized if
planning for yourself.

Halyburton Park is the City of Wilmington's nature preserve on South 17th Street.
The event center features natural wood beams, a glass wall and spacious patio that can
accommodate both a ceremony and a reception.
Nicole said she looked at the building after an ad caught her eye. "It was really pretty,"
she said, and surprisingly inexpensive to rent.
