A
“beach wedding” is a major draw for hundreds of couples who come
to the Wilmington area every year to get married.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the ceremony
itself will be held on the sand.
The setting might be one of the region’s
other waterfronts: the historic Cape Fear River downtown, or the
scenic shores of the many salt-water creeks and sounds between Topsail
Island and Brunswick County.
The beach proper remains a favorite setting
for portraits and formal group photographs.

Chris
and Nikki Cook did their group photos at Wrightsville Beach the
morning of their wedding day, Sept. 10, 2005. Advance winds from
slow-moving Hurricane Ophelia gusted off the ocean, snatching Nikki’s
veil away.

The
wedding and reception took place on the riverboat Henrietta III,
cruising on the Cape Fear River.
Chris and Nikki chose to break the old taboo
about not seeing each other before the ceremony so they could do their
group photos on the beach.
Aside from allowing the use of a different
setting from the wedding site, this let the bridal party and the photographer
work without being rushed, and not keep the wedding guests waiting.

waterfront.

Using two waterfront
locations, as the Cooks did, need not be time-consuming. From Wrightsville
Beach to downtown Wilmington is now just a 20-minute drive on the
newly opened Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway.
