Marine Corps Couple Celebrates. Valentine's Wedding Giveaway at Saint Thomas Preservation Hall
  Return to top of file

The former Catholic
church on Dock Street called Saint Thomas Preservation Hall was looking for a way to raise the building’s visibility while giving something back to the community.
In a brainstorming meeting a year ago, recalled volunteer marketing manager Barry Bernstein, “We asked, why don’t we give a wedding away?” And then, “Who shall we give it to?”
The consensus was to find a military couple, and with Wilmington’s proximity to Camp Lejeune, that meant the Marines.
And what better time to give away a wedding than Valentine’s Day?
The couple selected for the honor was Cpl. Cory Mathis, 24, a six-year Marine from Maryland, and his fiancee Marissa Silva, originally from Massachusetts. They had been engaged one year.
After three combat deployments, Cory is recuperating from wounds received in fighting in Afghanistan.

Arch of Swords is a time-honored Marine Corps tradition

Time-honored military
tradition, the “Arch of Swords” is common to all the armed services. But the Marines add their own special twist. As the newlywed couple passes the last of the groom’s comrades-in-arms, he swats the bride on the rear with his sword with the words “Welcome to the Marine Corps, Ma’am.” Marissa and Cory were introduced by mutual friends, and dated for several months before he proposed to her on a dinner date in downtown Wilmington.

Saint Thomas’s Gothic-revival
sanctuary was built in 1846 for North Carolina’s first Catholic parish. After St. Mary Church opened in the early 20th Century, St. Thomas served Wilmington’s African-American Catholics until the congregation merged with St. Mary.
Now deconsecrated, the historic hall is available for events of all kinds. It’s just two blocks from the Cape Fear River and a short walk from several small hotels and bed-and-breakfast inns.
