Producers from The Food Net-
work found Wilmington artist and baker Taylor Ross’s “Sweet T’s Cakes” website a couple of years ago.
They were impressed by her imaginative designs.
But it’s taken that long to get her to appear on the network’s “Cake Challenge”
show. It hasn’t been easy to schedule. “It’s hard to plan,” Taylor’s sister Whitney Ross said,
“Because brides sometimes book a year in advance and
Taylor would never cancel a cake.”
But this year she has an assistant, and it was finally possible to “finesse”
her schedule.
And so in April, Taylor and her friend Alison Meehan flew to Denver, along
with 179 pounds of cake, tools and supplies. Once there, they spent a full day shopping for

additional ingredients like shortening and sugar.
The challenge was filmed over eight hours on April 20. All the decorative
details had to be completed on camera. Taylor and Alison were one of four
teams competing, in
what will be edited down to a one-hour program.
Among the rules: The cakes themselves had to be baked in the competitors’ own
studios, and could not be cut in any
way.
The design was based on a drawing produced before the show. A practice cake, completed here
in Wilmington, was donated to Britthaven
nursing home.
Taylor’s friends, fans and clients plan to gather at the Fox and Hound pub at
Mayfaire for a viewing party when the show airs on Sept. 26.
