Unique nature preserve,
luxury resort, quaint village, golfer's paradise: Bald Head Island is all of these, and more.
It’s also one of North Carolina’s most romantic wedding get-aways. A short ferry ride from Southport, Bald Head is a world away. Wedding guests often give in to the temptation to stay for a mini-vacation -- or longer -- when they visit.
Steven and Tamara Still were married in the island’s chapel on March 25, 2006. Tamara says “I always wanted to have my wedding there.” She introduced Steven to the island when she took him to meet her parents at their house there. “That’s my beach!” she says.
The reception was in a semi-permanent tent near the Marina and ferry landing, with a view of Old Baldy lighthouse. Catering was by Bald Head Island, Ltd.

Tamara rented a large beach house for her bridesmaids. Their dresses were made by the groom’s mother, Pat Still. Her mother, Jayne Howard, made the bridal gown. The flowers, in season in March, were especially fitting: “My husband calls me Daffodil,” Tamara said. Guests got baskets of daffodil bulbs wrapped in decorative fabric as favors.

A good friend
of the bride’s, Tabitha Walsh of Bald Head Island, Ltd., coordinated the wedding, handling food, facilities, flowers and favors.
“We got lucky” with sunny, mild weather on the first official weekend of spring, Tamara recalled.

Bald Head is a unique mix of luxury resort and nature preserve. Its beach houses are linked to the strand with boardwalks. Golf carts are the only motorized transport. Natural areas are a short walk from anywhere.

Old Baldy, built in 1817, is North Carolina’s oldest lighthouse. For almost two centuries it stood alone on the island, which gets its name from a bare sand dune near Cape Fear. To sailors, the dune looked like a bald head looming above surrounding live-oak forests.
Current development began in the 1970s, and a majority of the island has been dedicated as nature preserves.
The island and adjoining waters were haunts for pirates in the 1700s, site of a Revolutionary War battle, and of naval skirmishes in the Civil War.
Today, Bald Head Island’s unmatched ambience and elegant accommodations add up to pure romance.
