Getting around the Cape Fear area
Maps of Wilmington and the beaches of Southeastern North Carolina

Getting around Wilmington and the nearby towns of the Cape Fear region can be confusing for newcomers. And because our highway system hasn’t kept up with growth, traffic can sometimes be challenging.
On these pages are some maps to help locate the most popular wedding and reception venues, as well as the main roads that connect them with the main hotel zones.
Some key traffic tips to remember:
  • The fastest route between Downtown Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach is U.S. 74: The Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Eastwood Road.
  • The main concentration of hotels and motels in Wilmington is on or near Market Street (U.S. 17 Business) between 23rd Street and College Road.
  • From I-40, the quickest route to Southport, Oak Island, Bald Head and other Brunswick County locations is the Outer Loop Freeway, I-140 West, which connects directly to U.S. 17 South.
  • Crossing the Cape Fear River during evening rush hour can result in delays because of congestion on the causeway between the bridges and Brunswick County.
  • From I-40 to Topsail Island, take the Outer Loop East to U.S. 17 North, then NC 210 to the Surf City drawbridge.
  • The Wrightsville Beach drawbridge opens every hour on the hour.
Expect to wait 10 minutes on busy days.
