Commonly asked questions
These are some of the questions that brides-to-be have most frequently asked about weddings in Wilmington and the Cape Fear region. Click on the "Go" buttons to see the editors' answers.

Beach wedding basics: We are thinking about getting married on the beach. We are wondering how to coordinate this, whom we can contact, and the marriage requirements and documentation needed for the service. Any information you could provide would be wonderful.
The editors reply: Go

Downtown reception sites: We are having a church wedding in downtown Wilmington, so we wanted to have our reception downtown as well. I really need some suggestions on reception sites that aren't extremely expensive! Please provide any feedback that you have about good reception sites and if you have to have a caterer, etc.
The editors reply:

Casual, low-cost reception ideas: I am trying to do a casual wedding on a budget. I would love to have the wedding and reception at the same location. We would like to have a dance floor and would love a place that required minimal decorating. A lunch buffet reception would be great to save money. What restaurants can you recommend?
The editors reply: Go

Topsail Island reception halls: I am looking for options for a wedding reception on or near Topsail Island. We don't require a traditional reception site, but are looking for something close to the ocean (preferably with beach access or at least a view), maybe that will allow our guests to be both indoors and outdoors. We prefer a venue that will allow us to use outside caterers as well as a band.
The editors reply: Go
The brides's responsibilities for the shower: Does the bride have any responsibilities for the bridal shower? I feel like I should be doing something.
The editors reply:

Mansions and historic sites: My fiancee and I are looking to do our wedding in a beautiful plantation-style setting. We want a facility that allows both in-house and outside accommodations. Which of these locations would be worth visiting and do you have other suggestions?
The editors reply: Go

Places for an outdoor wedding: I am currently looking for outdoor sites to have my wedding. Any ideas or suggestions?
The editors reply: Go

Churches for mixed religious background: We have a mix of religions between our families so we would love to have a non-denominational church. What can you suggest?
The editors reply: Go

Posting: Catering
"I seen that on January 10,2010, Keeley of Greensboro posted about wanting a Caterer? I used to work at Southern Table Resturant in my hometown, Nakina, North Carolina about 30 minutes from Myrtle Beach South Carolina and 20 minutes from Shallotte. My former boss, Mrs, Phyllis Gore, I think, does a fantastic job on catering, and I think she is within your price range. If you need anymore information you can contact me at my e-mail! Thanks,Brooke Long"

Posting: Fabulous flowers!!!
"I just recently had my wedding and my florists was so amazing I had to give them a posting. I worked with Moxie florists (http://www.moxiefloralstudio.com/) and could not have been more pleased! I went through Cynthia mostly (though her co-owner? did most of the design) and she is not only a highly talented florist but is also just such a pleasure to work with. I wanted to do something a little more creative than normal and they went above and beyond the whole time I worked with them while helping me stay in budget!!! The flowers were one of the main parts of the wedding I was really set on and Moxie exceed my expectations in every way. I cannot complement Moxie enough and would recommend them to everyone. You won't be let down!"

The website is fiftyflowers.com. just email me and I would be more than happy to help. fn8202@uncw.edu ~Frances"

Posting: Inexpensive wedding ideas
"Hi! I wish I lived in your area so I could give you more specific ideas, but here is what we are doing: Our budget is only 4k, with almost 3k going towards catering (which was hard to find in Jersey) Anyway, we looked at a lot of places and found it best to search for camps in the area. The salvation army runs a youth camp right near our church and rents their reception hall for only $250! And they are letting us have a few days ahead of time to set up, since our wedding is in the fall. We called multiple hotels twice each, saying that we were 1. having a group discount for a family reunion, and 2. having a group discount for a wedding. Some hotels gave better prices when we said wedding, others hiked their prices at the word wedding. I know you didn't ask about flowers, but we had such high estimates from florists that we ended u choosing fake for the alter and then real single roses for the centerpieces. I hope this helps! We had a really hard time staying within our budget, but all it took was a ton of time and energy into looking around. Congratulations!"

Posting: A perfect make up artist & photographer
"I was living out of town and had to call to find a photographer. With in the first 5 minutes of talking to Anne McGowan (http://annephoto.com) I knew I wanted to go with her. She was so easy to get a long with! I was living out of state and she was so helpful in every way. She helped me find an out door location (Fort Fisher - which was fantastic & cheap) and even a make up artist(get to her in a second). Anne was incredibly professional and easy to work with. The day of the wedding she even let me know when a piece of my hair had come out and pined it back in for me. She also let me know when my lipstick started to ware off. I really appreciated her paying attention to the little details that would stick out in pictures! As for the make up artist, Jennifer Banks (, http://annephoto.com/)Anne suggested I loved too. She is so talented and doesn't use a lot of heavy make up so you look natural. Plus it was pretty darn warm the day of the wedding and if she had used heavy make up it would have melted off. My make up lasted all night (minus lipstick - which is to be expected) and I am still getting complements from that day. Plus her pricing is uber reasonable. I highly recommend either one, you'll love them!"

Posting: Henrietta III Wedding & Reception
"Hello! We have planned our September 2008 wedding and reception aboard the Henrietta III riverboat. I was wondering if anyone else has done this (or knows anyone else who has) and what your experience was like? Was the food good? Was the staff friendly and accommodating? How did you handle transportation to and from the boat? We have not yet booked a florist and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on places in Wilmington to get quality flowers on a small budget? Our ceremony will be held under the red awning on the 3rd deck of the boat and I'm not sure what kind of floral decorations to use - any suggestions?? Other vendors we are using: Sweet T's Cakes for the cake, Hypnotix Spalon for bridal hair and makeup, DJ Professionals for ceremony and reception music, Accent Photography by Ken Ramsauer for all photos. Anybody have any dealings with any of these vendors and what were your experiences like?"

Posting: wedding vendors
"Since just a few months ago I checked this site often I thought I would write my opinions on a few wedding vendors I had for my wedding on June 21st. Anne Mcgowan Photography (www.annephotos.com)- Anne was a wonderful photographer. My pictures were gorgeous and she was a great person. Most of the time I had forgotten she was there and she captured some wonderful moments. She is easy to communicate with and is a wonderful wedding day asset. Something Special Florist (Cynthia)- After trouble with prior florist I went to Something Special. Here, Cynthia, helped me work with my budget to get the most I could for what I had. The flowers were beautiful and I recieved tons of compliments on them. Thyme Savor Catering (Danielle)- Thyme Savor's food was wonderful. This is what everyone was talking about!! Fort Fisher- I booked my wedding there last June, and paid the deposit. In January I received a call that they had me down for a wedding on July 21st, a Monday. Later on I was told I could not have the spot I asked for from 4-7. I would have to have it from 5-7. In the end this all worked out great but just be sure you check and double check with them. It was really beautiful though! DJ Professionals- GREAT!! Kept the crowd up and dancing, we had a great time! "

Posting: Ceremony Site
"I'm looking for a ceremony site on the ICW and am having NO luck. I have a pretty limited budget but have already had to bend on other things and am not willing to give up on the outdoor ICW backdrop idea. Does anyone know of a low cost place or even a private property that would rent out for a ceremony only. I love the Summers Rest Trail or Middle Sound loop rd areas of town. The reception is on WB so close by would be best. I'd so appreciate the help I'm stressing out...the perfect place just has to be out there!!!"

Posting: Orton Plantation Wedding
"I am getting married at Luola's Chapel in August. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the chapel as I know it is not air conditioned. They have told me I could bring in fans and lift the windows but does anyone have any other suggestions?"

Posting: Reply for Wedding on Oak Island/Southport
"I have recently booked my wedding in Oak Island - I found great houses at the west end of the island through Better Beach Rentals - the house is West Point and Tar Heel Haven. My caterer is just fantastic - his food is great and he's so easy to work with - Joe at Coastal Catering and I am also using Connie from Coastal for wedding coordination since I am an out of town bride. The photographer I went with is Logan Wallace www.loganwallacephoto.com. I just loved her pictures on her website and when I met her, I knew she was the photographer for me ! Good luck with your planning !"
