Beach wedding basics
Coastal towns generally require a permit
for a wedding on the public beach. (Most beaches near
Wilmington are within town limits.) Tents aren't permitted
in most places, so you need to consider a back-up location
in case of rain.
Let us also offer these cautions:
you'll need to be prepared to move chairs and any other
equipment you need onto the beach before the ceremony,
and remove it promptly afterward. Also, because of wind,
surf, birds and other ambient noises, you'll need a portable
sound system so your guests can hear the ceremony.
At Wrightsville Beach, you need
to apply for a "Group Activity Permit" through the parks
and recreation department. This must be approved by the
town's Board of Aldermen, which meets twice a month, so
don't wait 'til the last minute. That approval is usually
a formality, but expect the board to ask about parking
for a large wedding. Parking spaces near the beach are
scarce on summer weekends, and it's not possible to reserve
spaces.
The parks department recommends
using a shuttle service to get your guests to and from
the beach and avoid parking hassles. (More
on transportation services)
For a large party, you may be required
to supply portable sanitation facilities at the site.

To apply, write to Wrightsville
Beach Parks & Recreation, P.O. Box 626, Wrightsville Beach,
NC 28480, or call (910) 256-7925 for more information.
At Carolina Beach, the process
is more informal. You'll need to fill out a request form
for an event on the beach, which the Parks Director can
approve. There is no charge. For more information, write
to Carolina Beach
Parks & Recreation, 1121 N. Lake Park Blvd., Carolina
Beach, NC 28428, or call (910) 458-7416.
Most beach towns have similar
procedures. For details, town by town, of all the beach
communities in the Cape Fear Region, see our guide to
beach weddings. (Beach wedding requirements)
