Posting: February 2008 meeting at Anntony's
"Thank you to Anntony's restaurant for hosting our third Wednesday networking social. The staff at Anntony's was outstanding and the food was incredible.
After every monthly networking social I will post a message on this site to let you all know a little about what was said and how the event went. I will try and keep it short and sweet and informal. Thirty one companies were represented this time around, some regulars and some fresh faces. Anntony's provided more than enough great food and had a cash bar available. We gave away great door prizes ranging from a spa gift certificate to tux rental and a Bluetooth headset thanks to U.S. Cellular. Anyone wishing to donate items at the next meeting please let me know.
To give you an added benefit of being a member of the association, we are coming up with ideas and programs to help your businesses grow. I believe the networking alone is worth being a member (not to mention the free food!) I look forward to seeing the many friends I have made in the wedding industry, and the more that we get to know each other, the circle of referrals continues to grow. At every event we have a business card table set up for you to display your cards and brochures. We have decided that we are going to limit the table to only association members.)"

Posting: Brooklyn Arts Center solicits our input
"The Wedding Association's Public Affairs Committee, consisting of Gerry White, Judy Bradley and John Meyer, met in May 2007 with the design team for the proposed Brooklyn Arts Center. This is the old St. Andrew's Church building on North Fourth Street, which could become the anchor for what's already an exciting redevelopment of the north side of downtown Wilmington. We offered suggestions to architects and theater-design specialists on how to best accommodate the needs of caterers, photographers/videographers, musicians and other entertainers, etc., as the old church sanctuary and Sunday-school wing are renovated as an event space. While this project is at least several years -- and several million dollars -- from fruition, it will be an important addition to the supply of wedding and reception venues, offering a church-like space for the many couples who don't have a local church here in Wilmington."

Posting: Carolina Beach hotel OK'd without event space
"On June 12, a delegation from the Association's Public Affairs Committee -- John Meyer and Judy Bradley -- attended a public hearing of the Carolina Beach Town Council. The topic was approval of special zoning permits for a new hotel on the north end of the Boardwalk.
The bottom line is that the Council voted to approve the hotel, but because they had rejected the developer's original proposals, the hotel will have NO banquet rooms, NO meeting rooms, NO event space of any kind. Our presentation emphasized the severe shortage of venues for weddings and other events all along our coast, and how failure to plan for the huge and growing destination wedding market will hurt vendors and the entire local economy. One ray of hope: many of the local business people in the audience applauded our position, and there is some chance that vacant property next to the hotel could be used for the event space the developer so badly wanted to include in his own project."

Posting: Press coverage about destination weddings
"On Saturday, July 7, the Star-News ran a front-page story about the growing importance of our region as a wedding destination. The reporter, Sam Scott, started with an assignment to do a feature on the "7/7/7" wedding phenomenon, but quickly realized there was a more significant story about the business impact. Among those quoted in the story are Association Board members Penelope Morningstar and John Meyer, and member Jan Gilbert (Flowers by Jan). Here's a link to an online version of the story.

Posting: Atlantic Quest sold
"The March 8 "Star-News" reported that Association member Atlantic Quest as been sold to a Raleigh group. AQ's properties include Atlantic Quest Catering, and the Oceanic, Bluewater, Henry's and Eddie Romanelli's restaurants. (The Bluewater has been our most reliable "defaul" host for monthly networking meetings.)
LM Restaurants is best known as the owner of the Carolina Ale House chain.
The "Star-News" story implies that AQ's local management will remain in place, but doesn't say anything about the catering company. Hopefully Pete Daniel will be able to tell us more about how this affects his operation.
Here's a link to the story:www.starnewsonline.com/article/20080308/NEWS/803080343/1017"

Posting: Open House Thursday Aug. 28th from 5-8pm.
"Evolve Image Studios is up and running as a full time portrait studio and work center for Jeff and I. It has been a wild few months but it is amazing working downtown. The space is absolutely perfect for our needs.
In addition to all of your photographic needs, we are also one of downtowns newest event spaces that has a river view. We are located in the Brooks Building at 18 South Water Street unit #2. Tomorrow night, Thursday Aug. 28th, we would like for you to come see the studio all dressed up. With the help of Wendy Wright with A Beautiful Event, Brian McArtan with DJ Professionals and Ashley with Party Suppliers, we have turned our photography studio into a lovely party room complete with chairs, tables, flowers and of course wine and cheese. We wanted to give the community an idea of what we are capable of doing. It is an intimate space, 40 people or less is about all we would like to handle given the size of the studio. A great spot for your next rehearsal dinner, bridal luncheon, business meeting, holiday party or any other small event you might have.
Please call us if you have questions.
Thanks for your time. Come see what we are all about!
