The Best Man
typically functions as toastmaster,
introducing those who will propose toasts.
Traditionally, the bride’s father makes a
first toast to honor the bride and groom.
Then the groom offers a toast to the health
of the bridesmaids.
A toast to the couple’s parents may then be
offered by the Best Man.
A few practical rules for a good toast:
- Rehearse it ahead of time. Trying to “wing it” can lead to a tedious,
rambling speech. Leave your listeners wanting more.
- Have a theme. Ideally a toast is composed with a beginning, middle
and end, that combine to make the intended point.
- Don’t overdo it. Keep it short and sweet; two minutes is perfect.
- Remember good taste. Don’t tell embarrassing stories and don’t use
off-color language. Remember who the audience is.
