Planning an outdoor wedding
in one of our
region’s beautiful natural areas? If so, don’t forget to consider the call of nature, and your
guests’ comfort.
Whether the location is a beach, a garden or a tent in your own back yard,
think about whether you’ll have adequate sanitary facilities. This is especially crucial if your
reception will be held in the same place. Although you may have a bathroom available, it may not
be enough to accommodate all your guests without long lines.
Some places, such as Wrightsville Beach, require you to supply portable
toilets for a large wedding on the beach.
The simplest choice is the basic chemical toilet stall or “porta-potty.” A useful option is a
hand-washing station attached to the outside. This may feature anti-bacterial hand-sanitizer,
a pedal-operated wash water system, or both.
Companies that rent portable toilets say you should plan on one unit for
each 125 guests expected. If alcohol is served, you should plan on one per 75 guests.
For the largest outdoor events, you may want
to consider a more elaborate portable restroom. These are trailers that feature separate men’s
and women’s restrooms, running water, flush toilets, sinks, mirrors, electric lights, and heating
or air conditioning.
The largest of these include as many as seven private stalls per restroom.
This type of unit needs a source of electrical power and running water. The unit includes a
holding tank, so no sewer connection is necessary. The rental company can hook it up to the water
and electricity when it’s delivered.
