Same-sex unions
Unofficial in N.C. but often welcomed by Cape Fear vendors

As in most of the country, North Carolina does not recognize same-sex unions, under any name, as legally binding in any way.
Nevertheless, many gay and lesbian couples are choosing to conduct unofficial commitment ceremonies, either with or without a religious component.
Not all wedding vendors are friendly to the idea, but many in the Cape Fear region are happy to provide their services. For the vendors, this can require adjusting some standard assumptions.
For example, photographers who are in the habit of keeping their focus on the bride may have to get used to giving equal attention to two brides.
A florist’s standard checklist may not apply to an all-male ceremony that doesn’t include a bridal bouquet.
Same-sex marriage, and even the compromise notion of civil unions, remain controversial in some religious and political circles. So a same-sex couple considering a commitment ceremony should establish immediately whether a vendor is willing to accommodate them.
Some religious congregations welcome such ceremonies, but many do not. The same thing applies to free-lance clergy. Most secular venues are open to anybody willing to pay the rent, but it’s never a bad idea to be specific when booking to avoid unpleasant surprises.
One friendly starting point for couples unfamiliar with the area is St. Jude’s Metropolitan Community Church, 19 N. 26th St., Wilmington. The church has a hall available for rent, and can be a useful source for referrals to resources. Phone: 910-762-5833; web: www.stjudesmcc.org
Another helpful resource is the Out Wilmington Community Center, on the web at: www.outwilmington.com.
