Music for the reception
Planning your program, choosing musicians and DJs

For a reception, your musical options are wider, with a broad range of solo acts, bands and disc jockeys available. Consider the tastes of all your guests, and be sure the musician(s) can handle a range of styles.
In selecting a band or orchestra for your reception, you need to consider not only your own musical tastes but those of the guests. With a list of the types of dancing they will be interested in, you can interview the band or orchestra leader to learn how suitable the group might be. If your list is widely varied, you will want a band or orchestra that can play just about anything well and can use good crowd judgement as to what to play when.
Another important function of the bandleader may be to serve as master of ceremonies during the reception. The leader (or a disc jockey) may emcee special activities such as announcing relatives, anniversary dance, the ceremonial cake cutting, the departure of the newlyweds, etc. Be sure your announcer is supplied with a card with all the names he'll need -- including pronunciation guides.
When talking with musicians, don't forget to address the size of the room, the space needed for the group and its equipment, and volume levels for amplified music. You don't want to irritate your guests by playing music so loudly they can't carry on a conversation.
Also, discuss how the musicians will be dressed so you are comfortable with how they fit into your reception.
