Some of Wilmington’s
most interesting historic sites date to World War II.
The Battleship North Carolina is the WWII memorial across the Cape
Fear River from downtown Wilmington. Weddings can be held on its rear deck. A limitation:
The battleship is not fully accessible for disabled guests. The riverbank grounds can be
used as a site for open-air events or tents.
The other wartime site is the The Hannah Block Historic USO, at
Second and Orange streets in the Historic District. It was built in 1941 as a recreation
facility for servicemen. Now it’s the city’s Community Arts Center. A restoration in 2008
has returned the building to its 1940s appearance. A large ballroom, complete with a stage,
is suitable for ceremonies and receptions.
