New media: digital, disk and web
Technical revolution opens new options for wedding pictures

Computers, digital cameras and the Internet have opened up many new possibilities for wedding photography.

Digital images
Professional-quality digital cameras now dominate the world of photography, relegating film to a niche specialty. The best professional photographers are routinely producing digital images that rival those done with traditional film. But not all digital cameras are created equal, and digital photography requires special skills, especially in challenging lighting situations like a large church sanctuary.
Discuss with your photographer whether your wedding pictures will be shot on professional-grade equipment, and how this will affect prices and delivery of prints.

Pictures on disk
The new-media explosion has complicated the issue of ownership and copyrights of creative work. Some photographers will retain ownership of digital images, and sell you only prints -- similar to the traditional practice of the photographer keeping the negatives.
But most wedding packages nowadays do include a compact disk or DVD with a selection of digital photos. Some photographers are also creating slide shows and other multi-media presentation on DVD.
But don’t assume you will get digital copies of your wedding pictures unless that is specified in your contract.

The World Wide Web
Most photographers now offer online proofing, allowing couples to review and select the images they want, as well as displaying them for friends and family. Photographers who offer this service typically supply an on-line form for wedding guests and other to order prints.
Couples who set up personal wedding websites can link to the photographer's proof site. A wedding website can also provide links to on-line bridal registries, maps and links to hotel guest-registration sites.
