Decorating with light
How designers create magic in a whole room or just on a tabletop

Beyond flowers, linens and other traditional decorations, event designers are now creating dramatic and memorable effects using light.
For example, some florists are incorporating miniature spotlights in centerpieces, which shine up through flowers, branches and greenery.
It’s a new, high-tech wrinkle on the traditional technique of using tea lights or other miniature candles as accents around floral arrangements. We’ve seen recent example that use both approaches in a single table setting.
Another new technique that’s recently been introduced into this area is to “paint” walls, floors and other surfaces with light.
One example is called a “signature light.” This uses a custom-made slide or stencil to project the couple’s names and/or initials. This effect is most dramatic when it’s projected against a wall that’s not well illuminated. Another vivid effect comes when the house lights are dimmed for the newlywed couple’s first dance, and the projector shines the light “signature” on the center of the dance floor.
Larger areas can be colored with what’s called a “wall wash,” applying a gently shimmering pattern of colors shining upward from unobtrusive floor-mounted fixtures.
If illumination is the primary objective, a variety of decorative fixtures are available for rental, especially for outdoor events. These include chandeliers for use inside tents and retro-look street-light fixtures.
Probably the most breathtaking light effect we’ve seen is a large helium balloon, lit from the inside, that’s tethered a short distance overhead from an outdoor event.
