Precautions for hungry guests, and kids, during cocktail hour

The most awkward time at any wedding is often the interlude between the ceremony and the start of the formal reception.
Guests are waiting in the reception hall while the bridal party poses for their formal portraits. Thoughtful hosts may provide a cocktail hour, often with musical entertainment, during this time.
Beware of a major pitfall, however. If too much times passes while guests are consuming alcohol on an empty stomach, you may inadvertently be creating a host of problems for later in the evening.
Nobody wants to have intoxicated guests creating a scene at a wedding reception. Other predictable negatives include guests getting sick from too much food on top of too much liquor, or worst of all, a drunk-driving arrest or accident on the way home.
Especially if the cocktail hour is late in the afternoon, it’s a good idea to have a selection of snacks to help ward off hunger pangs and balance the drinks.
At a high-end affair, this might consist of servers passing trays of hors d’ouevres. Or it can be as simple as a platter of cheese, veggies and crackers for guests to nibble while awaiting the main course.
If the guest list includes children, a thoughtful host will remember that little ones may not do well if they have a long wait for food. And those elegant canapes may not sit well with the smallest guests.
One excellent idea is a special kids’ snack table or tray, with such proven hits as mini-PBJ sandwiches and bite-size cut fruit. Be sure to let the parents know this is available to help them keep harmony in their families -- and to keep peace at your big event.
