  silver
Flatware, the general term for eating utensils, can be chosen from sterling silver, silverplate, Dirilyte (a gold tone), and stainless steel in myriad patterns and styles. Consider what your life style will be. Another important consideration is the shape and thickness of the handles. Do you and your husband want to go through life trying to eat with a handle no larger than a thin penceil? Chopsticks are easier.
If you already like a certain shape of flatware, but want to assert your individuality, choose the same shape but a different pattern. There is a lot of variety.
Silver does require periodic shining, but some dishwasher detergents actually help if you use your silver daily. And why not? Also, observe that some stainless steels do not retain their sheen forever.
Your jewler or bridal registry will be pleased to help in finding your flatware.
