Second only to your grand entrance
at the wedding ceremony, your first dance as husband and wife is a
dramatic moment that puts you in the spotlight.
Choose a tune that’s special to both of you, with rhythm and tempo
that fit a dancing style you’re comfortable with.
There really isn’t a “right” or “wrong” way for the dance to proceed
after the bride and groom take their turn around the floor. But here is a traditional sequence
that may be helpful as a guide.
Discuss with your DJ or band leader the sequence of songs for these
first dances. A wedding coordinator can help by giving each member of the wedding their cues
to join the dance.
- The bride and groom dance first to their special song.
- The bride’s father cuts in on the groom to dance with his daughter and the groom asks the bride’s mother to dance.
- The groom’s father then cuts in on the bride’s father to dance with the bride. The bride’s father cuts in on the groom and dances with his wife.
- The groom then asks his mother to dance.
- The parents exchange dances: the bride’s father dances with the groom’s mother, and vice-versa.
- The best man asks the bride to dance and the groom dances with the maid or matron of honor.
- Finally, the rest of the bridal party, groomsmen and bridesmaids, join the dance. Be sure those attendants who aren’t already couples know in advance who their first dance partner will be.
Once the entire wedding party is on the floor, the wedding guests are
invited to join in.
