Some churches
explictly limit wedding music to
liturgical pieces. This is true in many Roman Catholic parishes,
which don’t allow secular music.
But classical music usually isn’t considered
secular enough to be banned. Even churches that are adamant about
permitting only “sacred” music have made exceptions for the classic
Wagner Bridal Chorus and Mendelssohn Wedding March.
While interpretations differ from parish to
parish, the general rule in Catholic churches is that all music
used in the wedding should be appropriate to the portion of the
liturgy it accompanies.
Some conservative Protestant denominations
don’t permit instrumental music in church weddings.
