A dilemma facing some brides planning church weddings is what to do about guests who want to take pictures of the ceremony.
Some churches impose an absolute ban on photography during a wedding, considering it a disruption of a sacred ritual. Some will tolerate amateur picture-taking as long as no flash is used.
Getting guests’ cooperation with such rules can be tricky. Some couples find that a discreet notice in the printed program is sufficient. But some clergy go so far as to make a specific announcement from the pulpit at the outset of the ceremony.
A useful approach that can satisfy guests’ desire for personal mementoes is to print, somewhere in the program, the wedding photographer’s website address. This allows anybody who attended the wedding to order copies of the professional photos.
Almost all wedding photographers now have “proof sites,” where they post low-resolution versions of all their work. Brides get a password that they can share with friends and relatives who may want to get copies.
Aside from the issue of amateur photography during a church ceremony, there may be an issue with guests trying to use their own cameras when the formal group portraits are being made.
The problem: a host of amateur shutterbugs will often distract one or another attendant who should be looking at the professional’s camera, ruining an image the bride is paying for.
The only easy solution to this problem is to pose the formal portraits in an area that’s not accessible to guests. Inside the church after the ceremony, for example, instead of on the front steps, where relatives and friends are likely to be lingering.
