For an especially elegant
and personal look, you may choose to have a professional calligrapher hand-address
your invitations.
The art of fine penmanship remains alive and well in the digital age. Experienced
calligraphers, using old-fashioned pen and ink, can address envelopes using a variety of styles. These may
include traditional looks reminiscent of Medieval manuscripts, ornate Continental styles, and clean, modern
letter-forms.
The formal standard for invitations is to have both the outer and inner envelopes
hand-addressed. The outer envelope has the complete mailing address on the front. Return addresses are normally
printed or engraved on the back flap.
The inner envelope includes just the invitees’ names, e.g., “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”
You can expect to pay approximately the same amount for calligraphic addressing as
you would for the invitation itself. Experienced calligraphers can be surprisingly efficient in their work,
but this isn’t a task you want to have rushed. So give your calligrapher plenty of time to work carefully.
Even so, errors can happen. This is why it’s essential that you order some extra envelopes with your invitations.
Calligraphic effects aren’t limited to addressing. You may want to have hand-lettered
place cards or table-assignment placards at your reception, for example.
And don’t forget the possibilities of having a lettering artist create unique designs
for your invitations, programs, menus or other printed items. Many calligraphers specialize in designing
custom stationery items, in addition to addressing service.
