The southeastern corner of Brunswick County is close to
Wilmington, but its position on the opposite shore of the broad Cape Fear River estuary makes it a
world apart. Bracketing the river's mouth are Bald Head Island and Oak Island, with beaches that
face south and even westward ... toward the setting sun! The eastern tip of Oak Island is Caswell
Beach, directly opposite Bald Head.
These beach towns are in the orbit of Southport, a beautiful old riverfront town
that's the area's commercial center. Southport is a half-hour drive from downtown Wilmington.
It can also be reached by ferry from Fort Fisher. (Runs at 45-minute intervals, $5 toll for cars.)
Bald Head Island is
a favorite wedding destination, combining spectacular scenery, luxurious facilities and a wide range
of guest accommodations. Necessary logistics include the passenger ferry to the island, and tram
service or golf carts for transportation on the island. For details about wedding options, contact
Bald Head Island Limited, P.O. Box 3069, Southport, NC 28461. (910) 457-7283.
Caswell Beach. No permit
needed. For traffic control arrangements, contact the Police Department: 1100 Caswell Beach Road,
28468; (910) 278-1555.
Oak Island. Write to the
town manager, with details about your plans, to request written permission for a beach wedding.
The town’s parks, which include “The Point” at the island’s western tip, can be reserved through
the Parks & Recreation Department with a $50 refundable deposit. 4601 E. Oak Island Drive, 28465;
(910) 278-5518.
A little farther west are three other beaches, all facing south, with a quiet,
unspoiled ambience. They are near the town of Shallotte, commercial center of western Brunswick
County, and not far from the South Carolina line.
Holden Beach does not
require a permit. You should consult the Police Department, at (910) 842-6707, about where to
have your guests park. There are no restrictions on tents, chairs, etc., but all items must
be off the beach by the end of the day. 110 Rothschild Street, Holden Beach, NC 28462.
Ocean Isle Beach has no
formal regulations and does not require a permit. All equipment and trash should be removed from
the beach by day’s end. Call the Police Department, at (910) 579-4221, to let them know your plans
and to get guidance on parking. 3 W. Third St., Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469.
Sunset Beach. No permits
needed, but all normal beach regulations apply. (910) 579-3808. 600 Pineview Drive SW, Sunset
Beach, NC 28468.
